Gallery Southwest

Thinking about galleries and gallerists that support and engage in the arena of contemporary southwest arts and artists.

Southwestern artists, especially those influenced by the Taos Society of Artists (TSA), have a rich array of galleries and museums that showcase their work. These venues celebrate the region’s unique artistic heritage and provide platforms for both historical and contemporary Southwestern art. Here are some notable institutions:

Harwood Museum of Art

Located in Taos, New Mexico, the Harwood Museum of Art houses a permanent collection of over 1,700 works, reflecting the multicultural heritage of the Taos artistic community. The museum’s collection includes categories such as Hispanic art, works by the Taos Society of Artists, Taos Moderns, and contemporary pieces.

Millicent Rogers Museum

Also situated in Taos, the Millicent Rogers Museum focuses on Southwestern Native American culture, featuring weavings, pottery, baskets, and contemporary art. The museum’s collection includes paintings by Pueblo artists like Albert Looking Elk (Martinez), Albert Lujan, and Juan Mirabal.

Taos Art Museum at Fechin House

This museum showcases paintings by members of the Taos Society of Artists and the Taos Moderns, as well as works by Nicolai Fechin. Housed in Fechin’s former home and studio, the museum also features exhibitions by contemporary artists working in Taos.

Tucson Museum of Art

In Tucson, Arizona, the Tucson Museum of Art‘s permanent collection includes over 8,000 objects, with significant holdings in modern and contemporary art, Latin American art, Western and Native American art, and Asian art. The Art of the American West Collection spans 200 years and features works by Native American artists such as Maria Martinez and Fritz Scholder, as well as late 19th and early 20th-century painters like Maynard Dixon.

SITE Santa Fe

Based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, SITE Santa Fe is a nonprofit contemporary arts organization that has presented numerous exhibitions featuring both local and international artists. Approximately 20% of the exhibited artists are based in New Mexico, providing a platform for contemporary Southwestern artists to showcase their work.

Gerald Peters Gallery

Has locations in Santa Fe and New York. Gerald Peters Gallery offers work by a wide range of native and other artists that focus on a range of topics and medias.

Manitou Galleries

Manitou Galleries is a distinguished art space located in Santa Fe, New Mexico, specializing in contemporary Western, Native American, and Southwestern fine art. The gallery showcases a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and other artworks from both established and emerging artists who capture the spirit and beauty of the American Southwest. Manitou Galleries provides art enthusiasts and collectors with expertly curated exhibitions in an inviting atmosphere that celebrates the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of the region.

Parsons Galleries

Parsons Galleries in Taos comprises two distinct spaces: Parsons Gallery of the West, showcasing historic Western artworks, and Robert L. Parsons Fine Art, highlighting contemporary Western painters. Together, they offer a comprehensive view of Western art, from its historical roots to its vibrant present.

Blue Rain Gallery

Blue Rain Gallery, established in 1993, has dedicated over 30 years to promoting cultural appreciation, blending innovation with tradition, and advocating for artistic diversity. Specializing in regional, Native American, and Studio Glass art, the gallery represents over 50 living artists in various mediums such as ceramics, paintings, bronze, glass, and jewelry. Now located in Santa Fe at 544 South Guadalupe Street, the gallery also has a print shop and podcast.

LewAllen Galleries

LewAllen Galleries, located in Santa Fe’s Railyard Arts District, is a prominent gallery specializing in modern and contemporary art. With a rich history stemming from the Elaine Horwitch Gallery, it showcases a diverse range of established and emerging artists. Known for its high-quality exhibitions and robust programming, LewAllen Galleries is a key player in the Santa Fe art scene.
