A creative journey to Cloudcroft

Posted on on July 23, 2024

Last weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Cloudcroft, NM, to participate in a painting workshop led by the renowned artist David Shevlino. Nestled in the picturesque Sacramento Mountains, Cloudcroft is a charming small town that served as the perfect backdrop for a weekend dedicated to art and creativity.

The Journey Begins

Arriving in Cloudcroft was like stepping into a storybook. The town’s quaint charm, with its historic buildings and friendly locals, made me feel instantly at home. I stayed at a delightful AirBNB, a cozy cabin surrounded by towering pines. The serene environment was ideal for an artist’s retreat, offering inspiration at every turn.

The Workshop Venue

The workshop was held in the town’s library, an enchanting space that was once a school. This beautifully converted building, with its high ceilings and large windows, provided a bright and airy atmosphere, perfect for painting. The library’s rich history added an extra layer of depth to our creative experience.

Learning from a Master

David Shevlino, known for his loose, impressionistic style, was the highlight of the workshop. His approach to figure and portrait painting is both captivating and educational. Throughout the weekend, David conducted several live demos, showcasing his techniques and sharing valuable insights. Watching him bring a blank canvas to life was nothing short of magical.

Hands-On Experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of the workshop was the hands-on practice. Under David’s guidance, we explored various techniques for capturing the human form and creating expressive portraits. His personalized feedback and encouragement helped me push my boundaries and experiment with new styles and methods.

The Community

The workshop attracted a diverse group of artists, each bringing their unique perspective and experiences. We bonded over our shared passion for painting and our admiration for David’s work. The sense of community and mutual support was incredibly uplifting, making the experience even more memorable.

Exploring Cloudcroft

Outside of the workshop, I took the time to explore Cloudcroft. The town’s charming streets are lined with unique shops, cozy cafes, and local art galleries. The surrounding nature trails offered peaceful hikes with stunning views, perfect for clearing the mind and finding inspiration.

Reflection

As the weekend came to a close, I felt a profound sense of fulfillment. The workshop not only enhanced my painting skills but also reignited my passion for art. David Shevlino’s expertise and the supportive community created an environment where creativity could flourish.

My journey to Cloudcroft was more than just a trip; it was a rejuvenating retreat that reminded me of the beauty of art and the joy of learning. I returned home with new techniques, new friends, and a renewed sense of inspiration.

If you ever get the chance to visit Cloudcroft, I highly recommend it—especially if it includes a workshop with a master like David Shevlino. This enchanting town and its artistic community have left an indelible mark on my creative journey.
