Taos Ski Valley Community Day

Posted on on July 5, 2024
Riding up the Taos Ski Valley chairlift to take a bit of a hike.

Last weekend, I took part in Taos Ski Valley’s Community Day, and it turned out to be a memorable experience filled with adventure, discovery, and a touch of local flavor.

The day started with a deliciously simple treat: hot dogs loaded with cheese and chile. Nothing beats the taste of New Mexico, especially when you’re surrounded by the stunning landscape of the ski valley. The combination of the spicy chile and creamy cheese was just the fuel I needed for the day’s activities.

After our hearty snack, we headed for the chairlift. Riding up the mountain was a serene and breathtaking experience. The lift gave us a bird’s eye view of the lush, green terrain below, a stark contrast to the snowy slopes I’m used to seeing in winter. Once at the top, we decided to walk back down the mountain, a choice that proved both challenging and rewarding.

The trail was steep, and I quickly realized I was using muscles I didn’t even know I had. At one point, I had to stop to tighten my shoes to prevent my toes from scraping the tips. Despite the physical exertion, the walk down was peaceful and gave me time to take in the natural beauty around me.

One of the most delightful surprises of the hike was stumbling upon a carving I had never noticed before. It was a beautifully detailed figure of a saint, carved into a tree, with a dog sitting faithfully by his side. The saint was carrying a set of old wooden skis, a charming nod to the valley’s history. Discovering this hidden gem added a touch of magic to the day.

As we descended further, the landscape continued to reveal its beauty, making the effort well worth it. Once we reached the base, we decided to stop by Cid’s, a local favorite. The visit was capped off perfectly with a refreshing cocktail at the Rolling Still Lounge, where we relaxed and reflected on the day’s adventures.

Overall, it was a beautiful day filled with simple pleasures, unexpected discoveries, and the joy of being outdoors. Taos Ski Valley never ceases to amaze me with its blend of natural beauty and rich local culture. I can’t wait for the next Community Day to explore more of what this incredible place has to offer.
